My feelings on this issue are very similar to yours. I feel we owe the public cooperation and it is also excellent PR. I have seen websites that specifically say please keep in mind  we are not equipped to do your homework for you. Others have a page of most commonly asked questions and their answers to eliminate some of the e-mail. Either way may be an appropriate compromise.
