I
have not worked with volunteers for the past few years, so that I have
forgotten much, but somewhere in my mind is the memory that volunteers who work
with children must have background checks with the FBI.

Checks
Christina: We do
background checks on everyone: volunteers, work-study, interns, staff at
our museum. We've been doing it for over 20 years so its difficult to know what
was done before. I can imagine that if you wish to do a background check on
current volunteers, you should do it with sensitivity and make sure they
understand that no one is being singled out. You could also approach it for
those who have worked there less than five years or just for new volunteers, as
you have suggested. Tough call.

Subject: Volunteer Background
Checks
Good Afternoon,
We are in the process of revising our
volunteer policies and looking at other institutions. The questions I
have are:
Does your institution require background
checks for all volunteers?
If this is a new policy, did you go back
and check current volunteers or only new applicants?
If you did check current volunteers, how
was it received by the volunteers? Was it
worthwhile? Did it cause any
offense?
Thank you for your assistance,
Christina Hirn
