The Henry Ford Simmons Internship Program 2004 The Henry Ford is accepting applications for the 2004 Simmons Internship Program. Designed for graduate students pursuing careers in history, American studies, museum studies or related fields, the Simmons Internship Program provides participants with an exceptional opportunity to experience life in a major American history attraction. Two internships are available for the summer of 2004. - Sound Recording Discs Documentation Project – The Henry Ford has an extensive collection of 20th century phonograph records (about 7,500). Collected by Henry Ford, these are primarily Edison Diamond Disc recordings dating from 1910-1929. They reflect a range of popular musical styles from ragtime to early jazz and include music by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and others. The intern will work with the curator and registrar to identify the recordings and do basic cataloging. - Greenfield Village Program Research – Greenfield Village offers seasonal historical representations of civic and domestic celebrations of American holidays at different points in time. The goal of this internship is to produce a research report for each holiday that will enable future enhancement of the historical program. The intern will work with curators and program staff to understand the existing program, identify and summarize the historical literature, locate primary sources including advertisements and photographs and develop a list of objects and reproductions that could enhance the program. The holidays to be researched include – Halloween, Thanksgiving, Easter, 4th of July, and community parades (time may not allow completion of the entire list). Two internships will be awarded. Each intern will work directly with a curator who serves as a mentor. In addition to completing specific project assignments, Simmons Interns are encouraged to participate in the larger life of the institution in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the varied aspects of museum work. The capstone experience of the internship is a formal public presentation of project results. The Henry Ford is the history destination that brings the American Experience to life. Providing an unparalleled depth and breadth of exhibits, demonstrations, programs and reenactments, The Henry Ford celebrates authentic traditions as well as today’s innovations – and gives visitors a unique opportunity to explore the richness of America past, present and future. At The Henry Ford, the real-life stories of American people, places and things captivate and inspire visitors of all ages.
