As a history museum, I think you will probably miss out on a great opportunity to reach a large audience - you should be able to create wonderful curriculum-based programming.  In addition, some research shows that working with children helps develop museum goers (albiet, those who
go with their parents are more likely to become museum goers than those who go on school trips).  Programming that involves families may be an important niche.  As a history museum and educational institution I would think that your message(s) would be important for your whole
community, which means children should be included.
I honestly can't think of any good reason to not think about programming for youth!
