Company Description:

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit educational institution, the mission of which is to honor our nation’s heroes, educate the public, & inspire youth about the price of freedom.  The Intrepid is a World War II-era aircraft carrier which has had an extensive & distinguished career.  The USS Intrepid served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, through the Cold War as a NASA recovery vessel, as “Best Ship in the Fleet” during its third tour of duty in the Vietnam War, & as an educational institution & tourist attraction at Pier 86 since 1982.  Also on site are the USS Growler, a Cold War-era submarine, & the Alpha-Delta, a British Airways Concorde. 

 

Department Description:

The Education Department currently offers programs for pre-K thru 12 in history, science, & character & leadership.  Some programs are also available for college & adult special-interest groups.

 

Internship Description:

This internship will involve participation in the development, execution, management, coordination, oversight, and participation in all aspects of marketing, promotion, and sales of Intrepid Education and Visitor programs, including developing marketing plans and materials, conducting off-site visits, and monitoring program revenues.  Intern will spend time in Education and Marketing Departments to facilitate this.

 

Intern Qualifications:

To be considered, candidates must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively.  Candidates will also need to have computer experience, exhibit proficient writing skills, and be comfortable with public speaking.   Candidates need to be a major in or exhibit a strong interest in education &/or marketing and an undergraduate junior, senior, or graduate student.  It’s also helpful if you have an interest in museum studies, history, anthropology, science, or the military.

The Exhibits Department is responsible for designing and constructing Intrepid exhibitry, as well as maintaining archival and artifact collections and providing historical reference for both internal and external inquiries.

 

Internship Description:

Work with the Exhibits department to research and compile a chronological and cartographic history of the USS Intrepid’s travels, to be incorporated into future exhibitry and a searchable database for use by both visitors and museum staff.  Other responsibilities may include assisting the Exhibit staff in archival filing, artifact classification, document scanning, and office and library organization. 

 

Intern Qualifications:

Candidates must be enrolled in college, credit-eligible, and available to work a minimum of 8 hours a week. Computer proficiency (e.g. data entry, scanning, internet research) required. Interest or background in History a plus.
