What we have done is to append the necessary digits to the beginning of the year notation to make the four-digit year in our computer files. For example, 942.0.0 becomes 1942.0.0; 42.0.0 becomes 1942.0.0. A good programmer should be able to make this relatively easy, I think. We have not physically renumbered objects, but persons working with the collections know that 942=42=1942 and that 1942 is the standard.
