Historic Preservation

& Museum Studies

Internship Program

The Jekyll Island Club was founded in 1886 as a winter retreat for America’s wealthiest families.  Among its members were such powerful men as J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William Rockefeller and William K. Vanderbilt.  In its heyday, the Club was referred to as the “richest, the most exclusive, and most inaccessible club in the world.”

The Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District, operated by the Jekyll Island Authority, is a 240-acre site containing 33 historic structures.  The site is one of the largest restoration projects in the southeastern United States.

Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District  Internship Program

The Jekyll Island State Park Authority, Museum and Historic Preservation Divisions and the Friends of Historic Jekyll Island Incorporated (FOHJI) are accepting applications for the 2004 Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark Internship Program.

Objective

The internship’s objective is to expose a limited number of students to the process of site administration and historic preservation within a National Historic Landmark District.  Multi-disciplinary approaches will be emphasized and hands-on learning will be given highest priority.  Interns will be supervised by nationally recognized preservation and museum professionals.

Education and Training

Following a national, competitive-based application process, four participants in historic preservation and two in museum studies will be accepted into a ten-week internship program.  Participants will be admitted based on academic background and achievement, and a genuine interest in museum and restoration processes.

Museum Studies Track

The program’s focus will consist of exposing interns to museum related tasks and duties.  Interns will be trained and supervised in areas including primary document research, proper registration and cataloging practices, interpretive planning, and archival organization.  One special project will be assigned to each intern to be completed over the duration of the internship.

Historic Preservation Track

The program’s focus will be directed toward exposing interns to the process of planning and implementing a museum-quality restoration project.  The interns will be trained in areas including historic preservation carpentry, building evaluation and investigation, structural documentation, interpretive planning, archival research, emergency building stabilization, and theory and practice of museum-quality restoration.

Program Requirements

The interns will provide a final project report and a presentation for Museum Staff and the FOHJI membership.
