Guangdong Museum of Art to open most comprehensive photography exhibition in China

Humanism in China: A Contemporary Record of Photography

When: December 12th, 2003

Where: Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, China

In planning the exhibition, Humanism in China—A Contemporary Record of Photography, the Guangdong Museum of Art has collected over six hundred works from more than two hundred and seventy photographers who come from more than twenty provinces, cities and municipalities all over China. All the work in the exhibition was created between 1950 and 2003, spanning over fifty years. Although fifty years is only a short period in the vast history of China, these years demonstrate great changes in the history of China and in the lives of Chinese people. During this time, Chinese people have gained a greater sense of individual self-worth while fighting for freedom and humanity as well as advancing the development of their economy. Especially during the twenty-five years from 1978 to the present, Chinese people have gradually changed from existing as a political collective to existing as individual and social people. The tremendous social changes that have continued to occur since that time
have not only greatly affected the lives of Chinese people, but have also been reflected in the daily lives of those individuals. We are now living in an age where people, as groups or as individuals, have realized the value of human beings and take delight in the pursuit and expression of such value. This exhibition will attempt to document this evolution.

The Guangdong Museum of Art Mission Statement:

The mission of the Guangdong Museum of Art is to protect, preserve, display, and research modern and contemporary art of all media. Founded in 1997 by the People’s Republic of China Guangdong Provincial Government, the museum puts emphasis on collecting the work of contemporary Chinese artists. As a result, the Guangdong Museum of Art holds the largest collection of contemporary Chinese art in Mainland China. Exhibitions, publications, and educational programs strive to engage museum visitors with questions regarding modern, experimental, and contemporary art, as well as national, global, social, and artistic identity. Museum staff aims to encourage visitors to engage in a deeper understanding of contemporary Chinese art. As technological advances and global trade continue to make our world smaller, the Guangdong Museum of Art believes it is vital to its mission as a cultural institution to share ideas across cultural borders. As a result, seeking to serve a diverse audience, the
Guangdong Museum of Art also presents work by and programs regarding international artists. The museum is working toward traveling its own exhibitions to international venues, as well. Through sustaining a high-quality library and archives, the museum serves to support and encourage academic research on modern and contemporary art and artists in China.
