Searching for a job in the museum field isn't easy--it took me almost a
year to get my first job.

Volunteering for an institution is another way to get your foot in the
door and a foot in the local museum network. In the past I have hired
interns and volunteers when job openings have appeared--they just happened
to be in the right place at the right time and had proven themselves.

If you volunteer at an institution and do a good job, staff members will
be willing to help you with your job search, alerting you to job leads at
other institutions in the area. I also keep a lookout for jobs for former
interns and volunteers when I know that they are looking. The contacts
you make while volunteering can provide much needed help when searching
for a job.
