I would much rather see the $1mil going to fund museums here than to spread propaganda there. It sounds like there is very much a personal axe to grind, which is never a good reason to start a museum. If they want to spend money to preserve the documents, perhaps they can create an archive in an already-existing museum and upgrade the climate controls and storage conditions in that museum to accommodate them. The author brings up some interesting questions about the time and space needed before public debate and commemoration can be begin on tragedies and atrocities. What does everyone else think? What is the appropriate amount of time and public debate needed before an event or series of events can be interpreted in a museum? Is it too soon to be discussing a museum in Iraqi? How about for 9/11? The Oklahoma City bombing? Other nationals events/tragedies? Shop of Horrors By ELIZABETH A. COLE Published: October 21, 2003 - New York Times Anyone looking closely at the $20.3 billion Iraqi reconstruction package that the Bush administration sent to Congress may have been surprised by an item near the end with a comparatively modest price tag: a museum of Baathist crimes, $1 million. What was this doing on a list that included police training and the rebuilding of infrastructure?
