EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT SPECIALIST

SUMMARY: Provides a wide range of support and product development with respect to the use of software, hardware, and telecommunications to Education and Information Technology (primarily New Media) departments. The goal of this position is to significantly leverage and improve the use of the museum's existing and potential intellectual and technical resources in the furtherance of the Museum educational mission and strategic goals and objectives.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in the operation, maintenance, programming, and design of various technology-based systems in support of educational research, instructional, or presentation programs.

  1. Work with education and other information technology staff in the preparation of detailed technical and analytical information, as well as media objects and text, for multimedia, web-based, distance learning, or other means of educational program production.
  2. Act as an institutional resource in instructional technology design and evaluation.
  3. Provide direct training and other assistance to education and other staff in the technical and effective use of software, hardware, and telecommunications, in support of their educational and programmatic goals.
  4. Work with education and development staff in the identification of and response to grant opportunities; monitor prospective granting organizations for such opportunities.
  5. Identify hardware, software, and training tools that will maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of our technology-based educational programs, and work with staff to evaluate, select, and implement these tools as appropriate.
  6. Develop proficiency in the tools and techniques currently in use at the Museum which do or could serve to support the Museum's educational programs [at time of this writing this would include Luna, Virtuoso, Photoshop, Trinity Image Processor, Polycom Videoconferencing and peripheral, SEF, Acrobat, Powerpoint, et al]; Identify and advocate for additional tools as required.
  7. Work with education staff to identify and evaluate information technology resource needs; derive specifications and advocate for those needs; assure that education needs are represented in I.T. operating and capital budgets.
  8. Work with prospective recipients of technology-based educational programs (e.g. schools, libraries, etc.) to help assure that they have and are able to use the technology needed to benefit from our programming.
  9. Participate in program evaluation planning ,implementation, and reporting.
  10. Help assure, through consultation and research, that Museum technology-based educational programs represent the current state of knowledge about usability and efficacy with respect to their target populations.
  11. Participates in IT departmental meetings to share information and ideas and help identify common needs and broad-based opportunities for investment across the organization.
  12. Acts as primary liason with specialized application software vendors in order to achieve promptest problem resolution and currentness of product; participates in product user groups as appropriate.
  13. Produces and present papers, demonstrations, talks, etc. at professional conferences in association with or in support of education and/or other I.T. staff.
  14. Maintains current knowledge of educational/instructional technology fields including theory, practice, and technology utilization

 

REQUIREMENTS: Formal and demonstrated study of, knowledge of and experience in the use of technology and technology-based content development in educational directed toward children, youth, and adult population; Technical knowledge with respect to the use and support of web, multi-media, and distance learning applications. Demonstrated knowledge of educational program evaluation and outcome measurement; knowledge and understanding of interface design and usability testing.
