As a former employee of a formalwear shop, a four-in-hand is the tie that you wear with a formal morning coat and other formal attire. It is usually silk, and is tied with a small knot at the throat and two equal-size, equal-length tabs hanging down (it kind of looks like two regular men's ties hanging next to each other). The end of the tie is tucked into a vest, and is never visible.
