I would suggest going to Mader's restraunt on old 3rd street.  It is close to the Milwaukee Public Museum (800 Wells), and has some of the best German food in town.  It can be a bit pricey and busy in the evenings and weekends, but if you go for lunch doing the week, it is wonderful.
