I think there was a statement made about how some of us didn't see the looting of the Iraqi museum as a tragedy....let me explain from where some of us may be coming, even though I can only definately speak for myself.

I seriously doubt that any person within the museum field or beyond disagree that the lootings of the museums were horrible and even a tragedy, however, there are different perspectives on this issue.

My perspective comes from my concern for the Iraqis receiving basic needs to live first (food, water, electricity, medical help, provide emotional, mental, and spiritual stablility).

These artifacts are certainly rich sources for our understandihg of the Iraqi cultures, history, spiritual beliefs and folklife...and there has to be a great effort to rescue these artifacts from the wrong hands...but can they provide medication for the injured, food for the hungry, running water for those without, an actual spiritual leader to talk to and hear about ones own realization of their mortality or a community coming together to support one another.....no they can not. These artifacts can be of help in motivating cultures to keep going and staying strong by reminding one of the richness of history and cultures, but they can not provide the things that only human beings, spiritual relationships, and basic needs of food, water, shelter (unless we are talking about artifacts in relation to buildings) can provide.

There's also the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Courtauld
Institute (University), Royal Academy of Arts, etc.

You can look through the book "Museums and Galleries of London" by Abigail
Willis, it sorts through the museums based on the location in Lodon.
