re: Horse Carriage Speed
In the l830's to l860's, in the Appalachian Mountains, it took three days to travel l20 miles by stagecoach.   This was covering rough terrain, using the Concord coaches, pulled by a team of four horses.    Stagecoach or stands were located roughly ten miles apart, because ten miles is the distance that a hog can travel in a day, and the stands were set up for drover travel.

Stage stops are typically about 10 miles apart--a day's travel.  A stage coach is a relatively heavy coach, usually drawn by a pair.  Size, design & weight of the vehicle, freight, number of people, and type & number of animals are all variables in how far or fast a vehicle can travel.

Does anyone happen to have a rough figure for how fast the average horse-drawn carriage would have travelled over typical dirt roads (assuming it wasn't rainy or muddy, etc.)?  Thank you!
