The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies is extending to May 8, 2003 the registration deadline for the following course. Collections Care Core Curriculum Considered essential background information for anyone working with museum collections, the Collections Care Core Curriculum is designed for staff with wide ranging collection care responsibilities for varied collections (historical, archaeological, ethnographic, and natural history), typical of small to mid-size museums and historical societies. The course provides a foundation in collection preservation issues and ideas. Students will gain an understanding of the nature of materials and the causes and effects of deterioration as a foundation that will enable participants to make informed decisions regarding the collection care problems at their own institutions. The program is based on the curriculum developed by the Bay Foundation/NIC pilot projects, and has been offered by the Center since 1990. In the past the Center has offered three core curriculums: one for historical collections; one for archaeological and ethnographic collections; and one for natural history collections. Beginning in 2003 the Center will offer one Collection Care Core Curriculum. Section I will remain unchanged and run for four class days. Section II will provide an overview of organic and inorganic materials from all three types of collections and will run for six class days. Topics covered in previous core curriculums such as paintings and NAGPRA will be briefly discussed, but fully covered in separate courses offered at the Center. Sections I and II are offered as one course (a total of 10 days of class time). NOTE: Our grant application has been submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Assuming that the Center's application is approved, NEH scholarships for 50% of the course fee will be available in 2003. Please consult the Financial Assistance section in General Information at the back of the catalog.
