Instructor: Cynthia Kuniej Berry Date: June 23-24, 2003 NEH Scholarships May Be Available This two-day course is designed to familiarize participants with some aspects of the preventative care and handling of traditional paintings. The course will broadly cover: 1. The basic structure of paintings: various supports, preparation layers, paint films and surface films, including non-original materials such as dust, grime and over-paints; 2. Causes of deterioration: environmental and physical; 3. Examination methods; 4. Identification of changes and damages: slackness, abrasions, cracks, dents, flaking, scratches and tears, etc; 5. Condition reporting and documentation; 6. Standards for: environments, storage, handling, transportation and installation; Sessions will include: open discussion and slide presentations, examination of condition and reporting, handling opportunities, re-housing paintings in frames, securing backings, packing for local transportation and a problem solving question and answer period. Mock-ups will be available. Students are encouraged to bring materials representing issues that their institutions are facing: including storage and housing issues, product information or handling concerns in the form of questions, photographs, slides, floor plans, illustrations or product literature. Conservation of paintings in the form of treatment will not be covered.
