Please excuse the cross-postings and the short notice. We just had our funding confirmed last week. Summer Archives Internship The Navarro College Archives and the Pearce Collections Museum announce one graduate internship position for summer 2003. Established in 1946, Navarro College is a two-year college located in Corsicana, Texas approximately sixty miles southeast of Dallas and one hundred fifty miles northeast of Austin. The archival collections are divided into four main areas—Community Archives, College Archives, Special Collections, and Rare Books—which facilitate research on the United States Civil War, the historical development of Navarro College and its service area, and Navarro County. Of particular interest is the Pearce Civil War Collection, a significant research collection of letters, diaries, journals, photographs, and artifacts from the Civil War era. The collection includes material from most of the major political and military leaders from both sides of the conflict, and an ever-increasing number of soldier’s letters from both the Union and Confederate armies. In October 2003, the Pearce Collections Museum will open on the campus of Navarro College. The museum will feature a 4000 square foot Western art gallery, a 6000 square foot Civil War museum, and an archives and reference area. Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the College Archivist, the intern will be exposed to a variety of routine archival activities including acquisition, appraisal, arrangement and description of archival collections; reference services; and development of exhibits. The intern will work primarily with the Pearce Civil War Collection and will select one major collection to process. The intern will also work with volunteers from the Pearce Civil War Service Project Elderhostel Program and the Navarro College Archives Volunteer Program. Depending on the successful candidate's skills and interests, the intern may also help develop educational programming for the museum. Qualifications: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in Archives, Library Science or Public History, have completed an introductory archival processing course, be able to work independently and efficiently, and have excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred: Graduate or undergraduate coursework in American history, particularly the Civil War era. Graduate or undergraduate coursework in museum education, or museum experience. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do."
