Here are some of my
suggestions regarding the questions on deaccessiong objects.
It depends on what
your deed of gift originally states. If your deed states that the gift is
an unconditional gift and assigns all copyright, title etc. to the
institution, you are under no obligation to publish, offer back the gift,
etc. I also think that offering back the gift may make the donor offended
no matter how politely you state why you are deaccessioning the object. We
offer objects to like institutions. I'm not exactly sure, but selling
objects to other museums is probably unethical, so I would suggest if you sell
them to do it in a public venue, auction or something in that nature and where
your donor is unlikely to see.
