I'm definitely going into conservation. -----Original Message----- From: Jørgen Wadum [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Friday, March 14, 2003 4:10 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: FW: FW: Musty clothing What would you recommend to these two discussing on the Museum-List? Jorgen ********************000000000000000******************** answer to drink the vodka; the recipes have drawbacks for dyes, silks, if the fabrics are soiled...better to drink the vodka, relax air the clothes & come back later. Fear (of making something worse) and sloth (doing as little work as necessary) are virtues in textiles conservation! Mary W. If the items are in decent shape, a mixture of vodka and water sprayed on them and let dry is great for removing smells from clothing. I'm not a big fan of Febreeze as I don't like the smell it leaves behind. Fresh-Again is another product like that that is used in theaters to get the smells out of costumes. And if your conservator won't freak, a good hang outside on a nice, sunny day works wonders. Lastly, you could put them in a garment bag with baking soda for a week or so and see if that works.
