We inherited a corroded 1950s chemistry set- we started doing research and learned we had explosive items on hand- We are fortunate in that we are in a small, rural community- I contacted the local coordinator for Emergency Management, he contacted the state chemist- after all was said and done we ended up with the State Patrol Hazmat unit, local fire and ambulance, and the state chemist here to play- The bomb squad from sixty miles away was placed on call- It was an exciting day- Luckily all of the departments involved were willing to write it off as training so it didn't cost me the thousands it could have- I have since talked with other city departments- the water treatment department and one of the maintenance departments both do quarterly hazmat waste disposals and will let me add items that are not explosive to their waste and won't charge me for it- they'll even take mercury Hope some of this helped. We have two unaccessioned vials of poison (one of which is morphine sulphate) that we would like to dispose of. Ordinarily, we would auction such items off, but given the hazardous nature of these substances, that seems to be the wrong approach. Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome. > > Thanks > Tracy > > Tracy L.
