UNDER CONSTRUCTION: Preservation and Collections Care Issues during Building Projects and Renovations A preservation conference presented by SOLINET, Inc., the Southeastern Library Network Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at the Sheraton Buckhead Hotel, Atlanta, GA, from 9 am to 4 pm. Supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. When planning renovation and building projects in libraries and archives, close attention to collections care and preservation issues is a must. During moves and renovations, collections are exposed to additional dangers, including poor environmental conditions, dirt, physical damage, and the possibility of disasters such as flood and fires. Environmental control, equipment, and storage facilities are important considerations in planning for both new buildings and renovations. This full-day conference is designed to assist those whose institutions are planning and/or implementing a new building or renovation project. The sessions will focus on preservation issues as they relate to planning, design, construction, moving collections, and disasters. Speakers will include architects, library administrators, disaster preparedness experts, and an environment specialist. Case studies combined with general information sessions will provide information on a broad range of pertinent subjects. Speakers are Don Cogdell, President, Cogdell & Mendrala Architects, PC; Michael Trinkley, Director, Chicora Foundation; Ann Hamilton, Associate Dean of the Library, Georgia Southern University; Alfred Lemmon, Director, Williams Research Center, Historic New Orleans Collection; Scott Devine, Head, Preservation Department, North Carolina State University Libraries; Mary Molinaro, Acting Dean of Libraries, University of Kentucky; and Deborah Freeland, Area Vice President, Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. Registration Fee: $125 The registration deadline is April 16, and there is a $25 surcharge for late registrations.
