“A Very Good Likeness”: Portraits in Early America, 1750-1860, March 28, 2003, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.  Sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Authority and the GMU History Department, this symposium examines portraiture in America from the colonial period up to the Civil War. Presentations focus on portrait paintings, silhouettes, early daguerreotypes - emphasizing their significance and placement in the American home - and portraits as a resource for historic costume.

Speakers include Maurie McInnis (University of Virginia), Anne Verplanck (Winterthur Museum), Ann Shumard (National Portrait Gallery), and Kristina Haugland (Philadelphia Museum of Art.) The program also features tabletop exhibits of period and reproduction objects - portrait miniatures, silhouettes and profiles, picture frames, early photographic images, and more - and resource books for sale. Prepaid registrations are required and must be postmarked by March 14, 2003. The $55.00 fee covers all sessions of the symposium, parking and lunch.  For information and registration forms, email [log in to unmask] or phone Historic Collections at (703) 631-1429.
