I agree... Melissa was not drafting a whiny note full of entitlement issues, as this response seems to imply. While I think that most of us in the museum field accept that we are not going to have high salaries, I *do* have a problem with pretending that we all revel in a glorious vision of respectable poverty because we serve our communities. There is accepting the limitations of the non-profit world, and then there is being a martyr about it. There is nothing wrong with negotiating for a fair wage if it is within what the organization can pay. Melissa, I would guess that a job with these duties at a medium-sized institution would pay from the upper 20s to mid-30s, but it depends a lot on what part of the country you are in, how the museum is funded, and how large the staff is. For example, I know directors at small museums who make in the low 20s and directors at large museums who make 6 figures, so there is a lot of variation. Good luck! Erica Erica S.
