I really love PS 1 in Queens. I feel like it is the one place with truly fresh art still being show cased. Also, don't be put off by the Queens location. It is only a few stops over the bridge and worth the easy subway ride. I also like the New Museum (I think that's what it's called) in Soho. It is on Broadway between Prince and Houston and often has great shows. Being a native New Yorker, I never miss the Met when I go home. I feel it's still worth it despite the crowds. Have fun!
