Okay, here's a silly question from a non-conservator:

To clean Michelangelo's David, why can't he just be gently hosed down with
distilled water or something non-abrasive or corrosive? After all, he is
marble, which I thought was a pretty tough material. I can understand the need
to tidy him up in hard to reach spots as well as wanting to study how he was
made, but why does he need to be scrubbed like he could break with one good
sneeze?
