There are paid internships---few and far between but they do exist. ORISE (Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education) Check out the web site, might be a museum type position opening.

Check out the CRM (Cultural Resource Management) side of things---they need conservation and archivists as well. www.shovelbums.org this is mainly an archaeology job listing but sort through the archives, some museum type jobs come through now and again.
