In terms of the GRE, buy some books and study them--there are plenty out there. The GRE is a completely study-able test; you will do much better if you prepare for it and practice it. As for applications in general, work on your essay to make it focused--here's what I've done in the past, here's what I've been doing now, here's what I want to do, and here's why your program specifically is the best place to build on my past experiences and prepare for my new goals. And--this will seem very obvious--proofread EVERYTHING. Graduate school is competitive, and professionalism and focus count.
