I would tend to agree that the piano should not be played. Finger oils and dirt could wear down the keys over time. Your first duty (as I'm sure you know) is to preserve the piano. A suggestion: Get a cd player and some piano music cds and play them instead of the piano. We do this with our Edison phonograph(not a musical instrument, I know :). It makes for a great atmosphere in our music room without wear and tear on the phonograph and I don't think anything is taken away by not having the phonograph playing. Hope this helps!
