Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or higher in design, art, industrial technology or a closely related field, or five years of specific exhibit preparation work.  Experience with power equipment for use in carpentry, cabinet-making, and construction; painting and staining; construction methods relating especially to woods; fabrication techniques relating especially to acrylics; application of laminates; ability to move both heavy and delicate objects; matting and framing; and maintenance of track lighting systems.   Good written and oral skills.  Self directed and motivated.  Good interpersonal skills.  Appreciate the responsibilities of working in a museum environment.  Word processing skills.  Preparator must be able and willing to travel, and be able to move at least sixty pounds. Desirable qualifications: Basic knowledge of professional museum principles, practices, and procedures related to the collection, preservation, and exhibition of objects; basic knowledge of North Dakota history; previous experience in handling museum objects; computer graphic skills.

               
Summary of Work:
This position is part of a creative and energetic team that has opportunities to work with specimens that are millions of years old, handle rare collections found no where else, and travel the state to work at a variety of state historic sites.  The Preparator compliments the Curator of Exhibits in the development, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of temporary, long-term, traveling and branch museum exhibits.  Prepares artifact mounts for storage and exhibition.  Fabricates exhibit furniture (cabinetry) and may supervise volunteers, interns, and contractors in accomplishing these tasks.  Cleans, repairs and maintains exhibits.  Installs and de-installs exhibits at the North Dakota Heritage Center and in the field.  Participates as a team member in divisional long range planning, exhibits teams, and other agency committees.
