The Museum of Texas Tech uses the MacIntosh operating platform, and for the most part, I'd say the differences between Mac and PC are apples and oranges.  There are advantages and disadvantages to both.  

For graphics applications, Mac is generally superior, although these days Windows XP is highly competitive.  Also, there is typically a greater variety of software available for the PC.  I do illustrations using Photoshop on the Mac, and it's a beautiful thing.  But, when we wanted to look into computer animation programs, our choices were limited.  Also, moving files across platforms can be problematic, so it would be beneficial to have an operating system that is sympathetic with that of your colleagues.  

To that end, PC's are generally much cheaper than Mac's, so if your considering gearing up your entire museum, that may be a consideration.  Typically, you get much more computer for the money with a PC.

Finally, we had some glitches when we installed a barcode system with our Filemaker Pro.  At that time, we were limited to the font software that was Mac compatible.  We solved the problem, but it took a pretty good effort.
