Model-builder, Drayton Hall

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is soliciting qualification statements from architectural/interpretive model builders for an architectural model of Drayton Hall, a National Trust Historic Landmark property located in Charleston, South Carolina. The site consists of approximately 125 acres of woods, marsh, rice fields, and cleared land, with the historic main house and privy, a historic wood frame building  used as our museum shop, and modern buildings for administrative offices and other uses. Drayton Hall is open daily to the public as a museum and educational facility.

The model shall be constructed of basswood at a scale of 1/4”=1’-0” and shall represent Drayton Hall and its two original flanker buildings (destroyed c. 1900) as originally constructed (c. 1742).  Some architectural research and conjecture will be necessary in planning this model. The model shall be permanently mounted on a rotatable base, approximately 5’ x 4’ x 30”, for installation first in the upstairs great hall of Drayton Hall and later in a visitors center to be built on the site.

The model builder will have access to all available archival materials—including sketches (see attached), manuscripts, HABS drawings, Historic Structures Report, and other consultant reports—to aid in determining the original appearance of the buildings. Sample resources, including a photo of a similar model to be used as a guide for the type of model and the level of detail expected on the Drayton Hall model , may be downloaded as a PDF file at http://www.draytonhall.org/model .
