I believe it is Latin.  I recognize it from the perspective of a gardener: a type of Hibiscus.  From the Malvaceae family.

Translation help:  I'm probably betraying my ignorance, but I need a translation (or information). We recently acquired a late 19th-century French statue of Jupiter and Hebe (c. 1880).  It may have been shown at the Salon with the title:  "Hebe Coelestis."  The word "Coelestis" doesn't seem to appear in either Latin, French, or English dictionaries.  Is it transliterated from the Greek?  If so, what is the word in Greek and its translation? If not Greek, what language and what is the translation?   Is it just a name? Thanks for your help.  Please respond off line to :  [log in to unmask]
