Good afternoon everyone, I hate to get into a discussion such as this, but I think should. I once skateboarded, what seems like many years ago now, but now that I work for a research institution, I have a new respect for the restrictions placed upon skateboarders in particular. Unfortunately, skateboarders can't be lumped with skaters, different all together. I've seen them using public and private walkways, banisters, parking lots and various other locations to practice stunts and show-off. Here at Indiana University, and in the local community, some restrictions have been placed on the use of skateboards, but not many, and we've had our share of accidents. We've had skateboarders break/dislocate both arms and legs trying to ride banisters and guard-rails, and then try to sue the institution where they were injured - which could happen at any institution. At the local Masonic lodge, a teenager was riding an outdoor railing, slipped and broke his ankle, and then tried to make the Lodge pay for his medical expenses (who happened to be having a meeting later that night). Its a serious litigous matter, and often skateboarders disregard safety protocals and city regulations, simply because they have no where else to go, and where else is better to practice than on 4 miles of concrete (college campuses)? But I must say that skaters in general are a very different group, I still skate, and like many other 'skaters', I adhere to the rules, but most skateboarders do not.
