To the person looking for children's festival activities:

When I volunteered at the Mather's Museum in Indiana, we hooked up with our reuse/recycle center and made up projects with the materials they had. In this case, Bloomington had a textile factory, so we used old thread spools (conical in shape, about 6" tall), and they must have had some kind of lotto center, because we used a bunch of Hoosier Lotto balls and let kids make dolls with them by gluing the styrofoam balls on the top of the thread spool. They could then decorate like they wanted. We also used the same thing once to make "Career Dolls".

Not sure what kind of museum or festival you are having, so I don't know that this is relevant.....but it is a good idea to check out your community reuse/recycle center and see what they've got! It'll sure make the activities a lot cheaper!

Valerie

We have made "rain sticks" using small mailing tubes and rice. The outsides
were decorated with markers and tissue paper, and then feathers on string
wrapped around the top.  We do these almost every year at the Broad Ripple
Art Fair.
