Dear Listers,

In response to the query, I've observed over the past 2 years while making an informal survey of the postings and hiring of positions in Atlanta museums, that people from prominent, nationally famous museums tend to edge out the local talent. While the experiences and talents of people working in obscure museums are probably just as good or may even be better, the cache that the famous museums have far outweighs any type of individual merit. I think part of the problem is that too many applications are received for each post. If you have a prominent museum on your resume, it goes to the top of the pile.

Local museum people may be hoping that the new employee's
national connections will be useful for their Atlanta museum.

Is this the case in other places in the United States? What about in other countries?

Cordially,

Pamela Sezgin
Museum Consultant
