David answered the question pretty thoroughly. If you are getting paid or
compensated in some way (like a stipend or room and board) you can't deduct it.
But if you are essentially volunteering your time, you can deduct the expenses.


And a good accountant is worth every penny. I got back over $300 more this year
because I went to a tax preparer instead of doing it myself. I didn't know some
of the laws and what I could deduct. Sure it cost me about $100 but that is
deductable next year and I've found out much more than I can deduct for next
year which will make an even bigger tax refund. Good record keeping is
essential and it will add up over time.
