When I interned at NMAH a few summers ago I got housing through George Washington University. It was in studio-type dorms right off Washington Circle. It was cheap (for DC), a good area, and a good way to meet a lot of other interns. If you want to be in the Adams Morgan area, I know that American University also does the same thing.
