TYPE OF MENTOR SOUGHT: Someone with experience in conservation of artifacts and/or archival materials. Ideally, this person would also be able to provide me with guidance on acting as a private consultant in conservation. CONTACT BETH BY EMAIL AT: [log in to unmask] MEET BETH MOSER! After completing my B.A. in anthropology in 1998, I had some idea that I wanted to stay connected to anthropology and archaeology, but I wasn’t sure how best to go about this. I knew that I enjoyed my very limited experience with archaeological lab work and the analysis and research on artifacts, but at that time, I didn’t know how to translate my fascination into a fulfilling career. I got “sidetracked” into working in development for a small historical museum. Although I realized that development was not the best fit for me, my experience made me realize that museums were where I wanted to be. So I left that position to pursue a M.A. in public history, which I completed in 2001. My thesis focused on the interpretation of archaeological and material culture artifacts in museums. In conjunction with my M.A. program, I completed several internships and short-term grant funded positions in collections management. Although I have thoroughly enjoyed my (albeit limited) experience in collections management, I increasingly find myself considering a career shift to conservation. The more I sifted through museums’ collections, the more I realized the need for conservation and preservation of artifacts and archival collections. I am drawn to the idea that conservation helps to preserve these archival documents and artifacts for perpetuity, so that they can be used for research and exhibits indefinitely. I am interested in learning more about conservation. I would be especially interested in connecting with someone who has experience working as a private conservation consultant. I would like to be mentored by someone who can help me translate my experience in collections management into a potential career as a conservator. I would like to know more about the professional expectations, ethical concerns, requirements, demands, and opportunities for conservators. ===== Indigo Nights [log in to unmask] Looking for a job?
