An MBA is geared for work in profitmaking organizations and you have to take a lot of finance classes that won't be immediately applicable; however, the other coursework is very applicable. You will not receive training in fund accounting, however, and a lot of the accounting classes spend much time on inventory accounting, again, which doesn't help much in a museum setting. I used every opportunity during my MBA to apply concepts to museum work and wrote papers using museums as case studies or examples. The school I went to did not offer either the MPA or MA in Arts Admin., and I had no other choice. The pros and cons that I come up with for each tend to balance the scales and put me right back where I started. Crystal L.
