Indigo and others,

The National Park Service staff at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site will host a scholarly program to promote the history of African American Women in celebration of Black History Month. The guest speaker will be Dr. Sharon Harley, professor of African American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The theme that evening is, “The Difference She Made…Understanding the Struggle and Appreciating the Success of 20th Century African American Women”.  Also to appear is the Howard University Repertory Touring Company to present an adaptation of Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s poem, “ We Wear the Mask”.

The program is scheduled for February 21, 2002 at 7:00pm, at the True Reformer Building in the John Anderson Lankford Auditorium located at 1200 U Street, N.W. Washington, DC.

Also, Black Woman; Achievements Against The Odds”  is currently on exhibit until the end of the month of February at the museum.

Mary McLeod Bethune purchased the 1875 Second Empire Victorian townhouse at 1318 Vermont Ave, NW in 1943 as the first headquarters for the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). In 1935, the same year President Roosevelt brought her to Washington as a special advisor on Negro Affairs, Bethune founded and became the first president of the NCNW.  The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site has the original holdings of the NCNW, Mary McLeod Bethune, and the special collections of African American Women and their organizations. Appropriately, the house that once served has the headquarters for NCNW now also contains the National Archives for Black Women's History, the only institution in the US solely dedicated to this purpose.

The Mary McLeod Bethune Council House is located at 1318 Vermont Ave, NW

Washington,DC 20005
