There is a similarity here to the fears that many baseball owners had when television was invented. Many owners thought that if they put their product on television, teams would be playing to empty stadiums with television cameras. Instead, television allowed owners to expand their markets and entice people to the ballpark to see "the real thing." One negative impact was the lower attendance at minor league games, but for major league baseball, television proved a valuable marketing medium. I think the same holds and will hold true for museums. As previously stated, there will be those that may never come, but now they know about your organization. And for others, a visit to the Web site and viewing an on-line exhibit may just whet the appetite for "the real thing."
