Hello,
A great place to go would be the Horniman Museum and Gardens, which is found
just a bit outside of South London. The address is:
100 London Road
Forest Hill, London
SE 23 3PQ
You can just buy a ticket ot Forest Hill, and once you get out of the
station go towards your left and follow the signs...it's a bit of a walk,
but well worth it! Oh yes, there are also some little places to eat around
the area.
Melissa

Ellen,
Wow, I'm sooo jealous. Maybe I will be able to make it back one day. There
are lots of great galleries and museums all over town, but one of my
favorite in London itself was the Hayward Gallery. Had a beautiful
Mesoamerican exhibit when I was there, very well done.
http://www.haywardgallery.org.uk/
Since I am an archaeologist, that was what most of my explorations were
centered on...the British Museum was a must. I got to see in person all of
the wonderful artifacts I had been entranced with since I was about 7 years
old. Granted that is hardly one of the less-well-known locals.
Oxford is well worth your while, I have many fond memories of my trip there.
While in Oxford you should check out the Pitt-Rivers Museum. It is very
neat and quite possibly completely aberrant to the American sense of
museology. I loved it.
http://units.ox.ac.uk/departments/prm/
After a semester of the local cuisine, the big, sloppy, rare-ish
cheeseburger I had at the Hard Rock Cafe almost brought tears to my eyes.
Oh, and don't order a chicken tandori pizza anywhere you go!

Dear listers,
I am spending a week in London in January and am consulting you very
cosmopolitan folk for your suggestions on places to go.
I am especially interested in smaller, less-well-known, perhaps
out-of-the-way museums and sites that just tickle your fancy. We intend to
spend most of our time in London proper, but are open to the idea of one or
two day trips (Oxford having considerable allure). Art galleries
(commercial) or districts as well.
Also: anybody have any favorite restaurants?
Thanks so much!

Ellen,
Try to track down a copy of "Cheap Eats in London" (at least I think that
is the title, also, being London, cheap is relative)--I used it for all my
restaurant needs when I was there in 1999 and did not find a bad restaurant
in the batch. As for museums, etc., get thee down around Covent Garden
where there is a little museum of mechanical "toys."
Have fun,

Hi Ellen,
I suggest The London Dungeon, if you've not yet had a
chance. It is located near (100 meters from) London Bridge
station --in deep, dark tunnels. It is a museum about
dungeons/prisons and enforcement/torture throughout British
history with some rather ghoulish displays. The reality is
so much more fascinating and horrifying than that which
Stephen King and Clive Barker dream up! Check out their web
site at: http://www.thedungeons.com/ (Then click on

For cheap eats, try the restaurants of Panton Street.
Have a great trip! ;-)

Science and Industry is 3rd museum to cut staff
--------------------
By William Mullen
Tribune staff reporter
November 30, 2001
Citing the slowing economy, the Museum of Science and Industry on Thursday announced it is laying off 26 employees, making it the third major Chicago museum to cut staff since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Like the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium, which also have announced staff layoffs, the Museum of Science and Industry depends on tourism as a significant part of attendance. Since Sept. 11, tourism in Chicago has been down, compounding revenue problems caused by an economy in recession since March.
"It's clear to us that the recession is going to drag on into next year," said David Mosena, the museum's president, after announcing the layoffs among its approximately 360 employees.
"We are going to be on a much tighter budget into next year," he said, "and that is why we had to make these reductions."
The cutbacks came even though the Museum of Science and Industry, like most of the city's major museums and zoos, this month experienced a promising rise in attendance, which had dropped dramatically after the terrorist attacks.
"We had 30,000 people here [Thanksgiving] weekend," said Mosena. "But still, in the overall picture, we're not able to make a trend on the upcoming year's business based on this year's Thanksgiving.
"Our revenues for this year are below projection. We still have revenue shortfalls, and there was no way we could put together a good financial plan for next year . . . without staff reductions."
The museum did not release any specific figures, though its attendance this year has been down considerably from 2000, when it hosted the blockbuster "Titanic" exhibit, featuring recovered artifacts from the sunken ocean liner.
Mosena said the museum actually eliminated 50 staff positions in the layoff plan, though 24 of those already were vacant. The cuts were made in several departments, including finance, marketing, operations and admissions, according to a spokeswoman.
The museum's troubles exemplify the turbulent times most cultural institutions are experiencing, suffering a double whammy of crippled public confidence following the attacks and the economic recession.
Public confidence seems to be on the mend. Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoos, in particular, with unusually balmy November weather, have had better than average attendance in the last month.
Adler Planetarium, which laid off 10 people this month, and the Shedd Aquarium, which laid off 44 in October, have been experiencing upticks in business since then.
"Our hope is that everything is now on the upswing," said Dawn Kappel, a planetarium spokeswoman. "Perhaps recent world events are making people a little more secure on the homefront."
Finding reasons for confidence in the nation's long-term economic prospects has been more difficult for museums, which rely on corporate, foundation and public philanthropy at least as much as admissions for operation expenses.
"Museums around the country are facing interesting financial threats," said Lonnie Bunch, president of the Chicago Historical Society.
Bunch recently authored an article for a museum industry trade magazine for publication in January titled "In the Shadow of Uncertainty, Museums and the Impact of Sept 11."
"The downturn in the stock market has major implications for museums," said Bunch. "It impacts our endowments."
The terrorist attacks also shifted a lot of America's generosity, Bunch said, from recipients like cultural institutions to families of attack victims.

I second that suggestion. And if you leave the Dungeon and cross the Tower
Bridge you arrive at the Tower of London, another worthwhile stop.

I am consulting on an American history CDROM project that is coded in HTML. As a result, it will be cross-platform and it will be simpler to carry elements over into the Internet based side of the project. It doesn't seem like creating a cross-platform CDROM is a big hurdle these
days.

It seems that the posting of CD-ROMs matter keeps coming up.
there is a company that transfers any kinds of manual, rather it
be a museum manual or training manual to CD-ROM's.
I also believe that they give discounts to non-profits.
Worth checking out, hopefully this will be helpful to
others interested in this subject matter.
The company name is Digibelieve Productions

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUMS'

CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF MUSEUMS
2002 Annual Conference
July 26-28, 2002
The State of Museums: memory, vision, responsibility….
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Deadline for Submittal is December 15, 2001
The California Association of Museums is pleased to announce that it will be holding its annual conference in Sacramento, CA, July 26-28, 2002. This year’s theme is The State of Museums: memory, vision, responsibility….
Museums mean many things to many people. And over the past decade, museums have come to mean much more than they have in the past. The role of museums in society has expanded. Not only are they "institutions devoted to the procurement, care, study and display of objects of lasting interest or value," as defined in Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, but they are safe havens where individuals and families can connect with others, information centers for children and adults offering resources that give context for understanding our world; they are special environments where people may retreat into work, beauty, literature, entertainment, projects or hobbies. At the very least, an open museum is a reassuring sign of normalcy and a stabilizing force in communities across our state. At the most it is a center of community answering the needs of its audience while remaining true to its mission.
This broadening social mission of museums can be quite daunting at times, often leaving institutions scrambling to respond to the greater needs of community. This year’s conference will help museums prepare for the greater demands for their services. From planning programs, to securing funds, to securing facilities and reviewing and disaster plans, sessions will address a variety of issues pertinent to museums today.
The 2002 CAM Conference will be a forum for ideas and issues that will assist museums to enhance the services they currently provide their audiences. Sessions will address a wide range of subjects and the needs of our museum community -- large or small, urban or rural, old or new. We invite you to submit proposals for interesting, thoughtful and interactive sessions that explore how museums continue to insure their sustainability by successfully serving the public.
Please complete and return the attached form by December 15, 2001.
2002 CAM ANNUAL CONFERENCE: The State of Museums: memory, vision, responsibility… is the annual conference of the California Association of Museums. It will bring together a diverse group of museum professionals from across the State of California for a stimulating and enjoyable exchange of ideas and perspectives.
Conference sessions are proposed from the field and are reviewed by a Program Committee comprised of representatives from California museums. The Committee is interested in sessions that address a wide range of subjects and the needs of our museum community -- large or small, urban or rural, old or new. We invite you to submit proposals for interesting thoughtful and interactive sessions that explore how museums successfully serve the public.
Sessions may address the following and more:
a.. examples of best practices in museums; reflections on successes and failures; explorations of professional courage; articulations of our core values as museums
a.. topics such as education programs; visitor services; collections management; cultural tourism; increasing access; using technology --and other areas of service
a.. revelations on new models and changing forms for the delivery of museum services
a.. strategies for museums to build their potential to be effective, meaningful, essential organizations in the future -- sustaining one another and their communities.
There are three different formats for annual meeting sessions. Please select the one that best fits your topic:
Panel or Dialogue: The most common types of sessions, 90 minutes in length with a maximum of three speakers, often with contrasting perspectives. The panel features a moderator who is responsible for organizing and managing the panel. The moderator briefly introduces the topic and the presenters formally address it in some detail. The session concludes with a general question and answer period. The Dialogue session also uses a moderator, but differs in that presenters are limited to brief remarks, a responder summarizes the topic, and the audience is engaged in a lengthy dialogue on the topic.
Roundtable: A moderated discussion on a pre-selected topic involving 8-10 participants per table. Each of the tables pursues an aspect of the topic and reports to the entire group at the end of the session.
Workshop: Hands-on, participatory style sessions, often presented the day preceding the conference. Pre-conference workshops can 1/2 day or full day. Session workshops are presented during the course of the conference and are 90 minutes in length.
In preparing your proposal, you might consider framing your session as a case study, demonstration, or project report. Ensure that your presenters will engage the audience and provide time for questions.
All proposers are encouraged to consider a range of ethnic, geographic, gender, size/type of institutional representations in the development of their sessions. We are interested in broad and meaningful perspectives, in particular, opportunities for museum professionals to engage with and learn from each other.
Some Guidelines for Session Proposals: The proposal should provide a brief description of the session including its focus and the goals the proposer wishes to achieve. Session titles should be clear and concise. If there are specific suggestions for presenters, they should be included. The more fully developed and clear the proposals, the more effectively the Program Committee will be able to understand and evaluate them. The proposal must be submitted by mail, fax or e-mail to the addresses indicated by December 15, 2001.
The Program Committee will review session proposals in December 2001. If your session is accepted, you will be asked to develop and submit a more specific description and details for a second meeting of the Committee in January 2002. Notification of session acceptance will be made in December 2001.

Ellen,
The best guide book is Rick Steves' Travels in London. It will tell you the
best museums, restaurants, hotels., etc. I have traveled with his guides
all over Europe and he is usually dead-on on what to see and what to skip.
The absolute don't miss tourist destinations are the Tower of London and
Shakespeare's Globe (Rose) Theatre.
As for restaurant recommendations, you should eat at Lee Ho Fooks in China
Town, just to say you've done it (RE: Warren Zevon's "Werewolves in
London"). The food is OK, but the service is lacking, by American
standards. Still, it is a kick to do China Town and the only place anyone
knows by name.
Have a great time. We went there in '99 and loved it, but I highly
recommend not eating a "good Curry" when you are 6 weeks pregnant. ;)

It is not smaller nor out of the way, but the New Tate is not to be missed.
The readaptive architecture is outstanding and several of the exhibits mixed
the modern with the traditional. Also, the view and food from the restaurant
at the top of the museum looking out over St. Paul's and the millennium
bridge is well worth your time.
I also recently enjoyed Chartwell, Churchill's home which is on the National
Trust list. You might look at the NT website for other suggestions of homes
and gardens.
