The Chicago Botanic Garden, in Glencoe, Illinois, is looking for university students and recent graduates to come work and study at one of the world's premier horticultural institutions. Interns work in a one-on-one setting with professionals who share their experience and expertise. The Chicago Botanic Garden encompasses 385 acres in Glencoe, Illinois 23 miles north of downtown Chicago. Its unique design of islands and water attracts almost three-quarters of a million visitors annually and maintains an extensive collection of herbaceous and woody plants ranging from temperate to tropical. The Garden's mission is to stimulate and develop an appreciation and understanding of gardening, botany and conservation by developing and maintaining gardens, plant collections and education and research programs of excellence. There are 21 positions available starting in the spring of 2002 they include. Conservation Ecology 3 positions -Practical, physical, hands-on experience in woodland restoration, prairie creation or riparian enhancement. Familiarity with Illinois flora is helpful. Endangered and Native Plant Research 4 positions-Assist Conservation Science Department with reproductive biology, demography, quantitative and population genetic studies on rare plant species, monitoring of native plants, collection of plant material for the herbarium and research projects. Plant Breeding 1position-Perform flower emasculations and pollinations, collect and clean seed, record data, photograph plants, and conduct literature research. Perform tissue culture research on the propagation of both ornamental and endangered plants. Plant Introduction 1 position-Responsible for written and photographic documentation of potential plant releases; assisting with management of production and evaluation data; updating source information for current and new plant releases; developing propagation, production distribution schedules for plants under evaluation; and assist with promotion of program through publications, seminars and special events. Horticulture 4 positions-Practical hands-on gardening experience in four classic display gardens. Greenhouse, Production and Propagation 3 positions-Work in display greenhouse maintaining plant collection or in the production greenhouse propagating and growing garden plants for outdoor displays. Community Gardening 2 positions-Work with design, installation and maintenance for school and community gardens in the City of Chicago, including extensive work with children. Plant Records 1 position-Assist Collections Management department with accessioning, mapping, labeling, researching new and rare plants, entering data, creating computerized maps, generating plant lists, producing display labels and record keeping to track live plant collections. School Services 1 position-Develop and facilitate educational programs for students preschool through high school and teachers. Duties include research, writing and prototyping educator materials and interpretive training guides, and presentation of outdoor education programs for students.
