The very successful approach used by the Lincoln Park Zoo is also used, albiet somewhat differently, by ScienceWorks, the science MUSEUM (NOT centre) of the Museum of Victoria in Melbourne. Over the years, they have developed a series of excellent packages for teachers, which include materials for pre-visit activities, materials to help the teachers plan the visits, and post-visit activities. Whilst on the visit, it is the TEACHER who leads the activities. Museum staff are there to provide assistance, if required, such as certain demonstrations (as in the case of their enormous Tesla coil), but the onus is solidly on the teacher to plan the visit and make it work. I do not know if the museum has developed teacher workshops, such as Terrie describes but, knowing the quality and enthusiasm of their staff, I would be surprised if they had not.
