Dear Sarah,
I am speaking from experience here... the best thing to do would be to find a volunteer position with a local museum or gallery.  This could be only a few hours each week, or full-time, depending on your financial situation at present.  This allows you to make local contacts in the art field, while giving you concrete experience.  Also, many museums require an advanced degree, such as an M.A. or a PhD.  The whole key, I have found, is networking.  In the meantime, keep sending out those resumes.  I hope this advice is of some help.
