Dear lady,

I seem to recall that there are products on the market that recreate the
look of wood shingles almost perfectly.  I know hard core preservationists
will take a dim view of the use of synthetic materials to replace the real
thing on a historic structure, but it seems to me that the squirrels are
part of that old place's history too.
