If you want to learn on your own, get some reading materials and a
dictionary. Start with children's books, and work your way up. I've
seen this work before in immersion programs. It takes some time
but is entertaining. It's how I learned and am improving my reading
and writing in Japanese.

And now good morrow to our waking souls,
Which watch not one another out of fear;
For love all love of other sights controls,
And makes one little room an everywhere.
