Jackie, I suppose that depends on your "public". Typically our annual Day of the Dead celebration takes place in the museum, last November we did the program at a neighborhood Latino center, primarily for children and young adults. We found that our core museum audience did not attend. This could be because they were unfamiliar with the other org. and the neighborhood. It could also be that there is the belief by this core museum audience that this is a rough neighborhood. On the other hand, we do after-school programming outside of the museum that is quite successful. If it was in the museum, we would totally lose this audience as these are children that walk to the neighborhood center or the bus drops them off. On occasion, we will even go into the schools to provide after-school programming. It is an immediate and built-in audience. I think you need to consider what you are trying to accomplish, who you are trying to serve and how they will respond based on the location. Do they have transportation, do you need the museum facility or can you take materials outside to another location? The great thing about doing outreach outside the museum walls is that, hopefully, you will reach a group of people that might not be inclined to visit a museum. So consider the goal of your program and that should lead you to an answer of what will be successful. How is success measured anyway? Is it the number of people you serve or what you accomplish?
