This message is in response to Mr. Durschlag's posting about reproductions of slave artifacts. I have sent him the information below, but I thought all might benefit from it, so I am posting it here as well. I think that the best source for reproductions of Colonoware ceramics (slave made ceramics) would be the Gullah potters of the South Carolina and Georgia low country. For those of you unfamiliar with the Gullah, they are a descendant group of the slaves brought into the low country to work the rice plantations. They retained much of their African cultural heritage including ceramic making, basketmaking, and even some religious traditions. The Gullah cultural community flourishes today in the low country of the Carolinas and Georgia where they still produce finely woven sweet grass baskets and ceramics that are nearly identical to those produced 300 years ago. Although, what was once produced for utilitarian purposes, is now produced as an artform, Gullah ceramics are made with the same technology and local materials (local clays and marine shell tempers) that vessels were made with 300 years ago. Thats why I feel like the best source for reproductions of slave ceramics would be the Gullah artisans of the Carolinas and Georgia. I have compiled a small list of several links to websites that relate to Gullah ceramics and several Galleries that display and sell Gullah artwork and Artists guilds. If anyone would be interested in those links, please reply to me off list and I will be happy to forward it to you. Hope this helps anybody who needs it.
